Aquaculture is one of Norway’s largest export industries. The Norwegian government wants the aquaculture industry to grow within an environmentally sustainable framework. Two important environmental challenges are the impacts of escaped farmed salmon on wild salmon and the impacts of sea lice on wild salmonid populations.

Aquaculture and interactions with wild salmonids constitute one of NINA’s strategic institute priorities in the period 2013-2017.
