Fisheries and aquaculture

The aquaculture industry and the coastal fisheries share locations and resources, and both profit from a sustainable development.

An important job for NINA is to investigate the ecological interactions between aquaculture and fisheries, often through collaborations with other, central institutions. We also work to strengthen the coexistence of different industries along the coastal zone. For instance, we strive to develop sustainable methods and technologies for commercializing wild fish, attracted to aquaculture facilities.

Current research:

  • Reduced consumer quality in wild fish attracted to aquaculture facilities
  • Effects of the attraction of aquaculture facilities on egg quality and spawning migrations in wild fish
  • Potential spread of environmental pollutants and pathogens between farm fish and wild fish
