I am a senior researcher at the Norwegian institute for Nature Research. I study the interaction between species’ spatial ecology and anthropogenic development and land use. We model how species move among their core functional areas, while avoiding sources of disturbance. We developed a coherent, formal framework to quantify species' functional habitats, movement corridors, habitat loss, fragmentation, and cumulative human impacts on ecological networks.
We developed innovative tools to quantify the cumulative impact of anthropogenic activities on ecological networks, including the software ConScape (ConnectedLandsapes
www.conscape.org), and the Library OneImpact (XXX) . We developed a portfolio tools to guide sustainable land planning: these can perform scenario analyses to assess the impact of infrastructure development (including hydro- and wind-power, roads, tourist resorts, ski tracks, urban areas..), and human disturbance (tourist volume, traffic volume etc). Scenario analyses are also used to identify the most efficient mitigation or restoration options. We can also perform sensitivity analyses to identify the most important areas to be prioritized for conservation and for restoration (Zonation).
Our team focusses on both methodological innovations - to ensure cutting-edge, science-based results - and on applied studies to guide sustainable species' management and area planning, involving multiple stakeholders. Most of our work builds on analyses of GPS monitored large ungulates in Scandinavia (wild and semi-domestic
reindeer (see web page 1 and 2) - but also moose, red deer). However, the theoretical and methodological frameworks de are now extended to model functional connectivity for a variety of species and ecosystems, including pollinators, beetles, trees and old forest ecosystems. See
Map Portal for ecological connectivity in Norway.
I am currently (2024-) leading the NFR-funded research project
GreenPlan, and contributing to One-Impact and TwinFjord - plus several applied projects funded by Statsforvaltnere, national parks, hydropower companies, and management agencies to guide sustainable land planning through scenario analyses
