Key qualifications
Simensen's research is focused on landscape characterization and mapping, landscape ecology and land use-, land cover- and landscape changes. He has 20 years of professional experience from spatial planning and nature management, including work experience from Norway, Chile, Turkey, Uganda, South Africa, and the USA. With experience as a practitioner, a government employee and as a scientist, Simensen has extensive experience in handling questions at the science-policy interface. Simensen holds a PhD in ecology from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. He holds a Master's degree (Cand. agric.) in landscape architecture from the agricultural university at Ås (NMBU).

Experience
2021 – Norwegian Institute for Nature Research
My research is focused on landscape ecology, physical geography and the study of patterns of diversity in Earth's biotic and abiotic processes and features. I also work with the application of scientific knowledge in land use planning, environmental impact assessment and nature management.
2016 – 2021 Norwegian Environment Agency, senior adviser Spatial analysis, remote sensing, and GIS for ecological applications. Responsible for several programs at the science-policy interface, including the development of the management concept ‘Green infrastructure’.
2011 – 2016 Norwegian Environment Agency, Head of section Spatial planning and regional coordination. Areas of expertise: development of guidance related to environmental issues in spatial planning and environmental impact assessment; sustainable land use, the European landscape convention; green structure planning and urban ecology; environmental impact assessment. coordination of the regional authorities within the implementation of environmental policy in Norway; development and maintenance of the website ‘miljokommune.no’.
2004 – 2011 Sweco Norway, Spatial planner and environmental Consultant Landscape analysis and environmental impact assessment of more than 30 development projects related to wind power, hydropower, transmission lines, road planning and nature conservation. Landscape and visual impact assessment. Spatial planning. Landscape planning related to large scale development projects, including the integration of environmental issues into the development process.
