Biodiversity Knowledge Agora (BioAgora)

Text/HTM

The vision of BioAgora

We will create an ’agora’, or gathering place, where current
and future research actors can each bring in their expertise, experience, and products to share and exchange to advance more effective decision-making for biodiversity in the European Union.

BioAgora gathers a Consortium of 22 partners, from 13 European countries.

Main objectives

BioAgora aims at connecting scientists and their research on biodiversity to policy makers and policy actors. BioAgora has an ambition of developing a model of the new European “Science Service for Biodiversity” that will fully support the ecological transition required by the European Green Deal and the EU’s Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. BioAgora aims to achieve four goals:

Develop a fair and functional Science Service for Biodiversity a solution-oriented service that will feed into the European Commission’s Knowledge Center for Biodiversity (KCBD).

Use demonstration cases across EU Member States that facilitate the implementation of Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 to show real life actions and processes in various biodiversity management and governance contexts.

Assess existing Science Policy Interface networks, knowledge and policies to break the silo thinking between science, society and policy, and to improve biodiversity mainstreaming in various sectors and EU policies.

Promote capacity building and co-learning processes for an inclusive and functional Science Service to ensure openness and participation of all relevant stakeholders.

NINA’s contribution - work packages

WP1 – Underpinning the Biodiversity Strategy – Case Study Hub (Lead UFZ, UniTrento): Roel May, Zander Venter and Jiska van Dijk

There are 4 main DCs:

  • Freshwater - Restoring River connectivity to improve freshwater biodiversity.
  • Nature based Solutions (NBS) - Related to the greening of urban and peri-urban areas to bring resilient nature back into our cities and ensure sustainable urban ecosystems.
  • Pollination - Related to agriculture.
  • Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) - To elaborate on the interactions of the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and the CBD processes, and deal with all sections of the Biodiversity Strategy, to see how they mutually support or compete with each other (collaborating with Horizon Europe ‘Cooperation with CBD’ call).

NINA will contribute with a sustainable land DC to facilitate the implementation of the 30x30 target within the biodiversity strategy, using the same approaches as from the 4 main DC’s.

WP2 – Landscape of actors, networks and policies (Lead SYKE): Matthew Grainger

NINA contributes with assessing the cross-sectoral dialogue and biodiversity policy environment.

WP3 – State of knowledge (Lead WCMC): Katariina Vuorinen, Jiska van Dijk, Anette L. Havmo

NINA will map challenges of past research gap and horizon scanning exercises, to create recommendations for how such activities should be conducted in the future Science Service. Collaboration with Alternet among others.

WP4 – Inclusive and functional Science Service (Lead INRAE): Jiska van Dijk

NINA contributes with building the Science Service, setting up the functions, governing bodies, decision-making mechanisms and ethical infrastructure.

WP5 – Empowering collective agency across scales and sectors (Lead ESSRG): Katariina Vuorinen, Jiska van Dijk, Anette L. Havmo, Kristin E. Mathiesen

NINA, together with Alternet, contributes with broadening the capacities towards transdisciplinary collaboration, implements Summer Schools/workshops among others.

WP6 – Coordination and Project Management (Lead SYKE): Jiska van Dijk

NINA contributes with the Data management plan among others.

WP7 – Communication, dissemination and exploitation (Lead Pensoft): Jiska van Dijk.
